Cloud Drive Mapper (CDM) file handling restrictions
CDM automatically blocks or skips specific files or folders when you copy these from a storage location (local or network) into CDM-mapped drives. This intentional behavior ensures system consistency, preserves folder iconography, and maintains compatibility with OneDrive and SharePoint’s own file handling restrictions.
CDM blocks or skips the following files and folders:
-
desktop.ini – Controls folder iconography and display settings. CDM blocks or skips this file to prevent interference with the user experience.
-
autorun.inf – Often used by malicious software for automatic execution. CDM blocks or skips this file to reduce security risks.
-
$RECYCLE.BIN – This is a system folder for deleted items. CDM blocks or skips this folder as copying it provides no functional purpose and can cause errors.
As a result, you may see a Destination Folder Access Denied dialog box when copying these files and folders from your network drive into CDM-mapped drives.
To avoid issues when copying folders into CDM-mapped drives, delete any instances of desktop.ini, autorun.inf, or $RECYCLE.BIN from the source folder beforehand.
In addition to CDM’s restrictions, Microsoft 365 enforces its own limitations on file types, characters, and naming conventions in OneDrive and SharePoint. For more information about restrictions and limitations in OneDrive and SharePoint, refer to the official Microsoft documentation.
