Using legacy Microsoft Office versions with Cloud Drive Mapper (CDM)
We recommend using the latest Microsoft 365 apps with CDM for co-authoring. You can use legacy Microsoft Office versions with CDM, but CDM may not support full co-authoring capabilities.
Please refer to the table below to see how CDM supports co-authoring in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with each version of Microsoft Office.
Office version | App Protocol | Word | Excel | PowerPoint |
---|---|---|---|---|
M365 | 10 | Real-time | Real-time | Real-time |
2021 | 10 | Real-time | Real-time | Real-time |
2019*3 | 8 | Real-time*1 | Not supported*2 | Updates available*1 |
2016*3 | 9 | Real-time*1 | Updates available*1 | Updates available*1 |
-
Real-time: Co-authoring is available in real-time for these versions.
-
Updates available: Co-authoring is not available in real-time. When a co-author changes the document, the user will receive a notification within the document informing them that an updated file version is available. The user can click the notification to get the latest changes from the other co-authors.
-
*1: CDM does not support co-authoring when you are creating new files in your mapped drives. This is the only distinction from OneDrive Sync Client, as protocols 8 and 9 depend on the sync engine to create the files. To avoid the complexity of managing conflicts, co-authoring is not supported for these versions of Office when creating new files.
-
*2: CDM doesn’t allow co-authoring in this version of Excel. The difference between CDM and OneDrive Sync Client is that OneDrive Sync Client immediately informs you if the workbook is read-only and requires you to select Edit Workbook to check out the file. CDM does not notify you if the workbook is read-only. Co-authoring with CDM is unavailable in this Excel version to avoid interference with checkout settings.
-
*3: In versions 2016 and 2019, CDM can’t distinguish between a typical Save and Save As. This may result in data loss when using Save As and overwriting an existing file.
