Conflict and error management

Cloud Drive Mapper (CDM) may sometimes encounter conflicts or errors between the local and remote versions of files and folders it attempts to track and actively sync. In such instances, CDM will prompt you for input via the Issue resolver window to avoid data loss and ensure seamless active synchronization.

Understanding conflicts

CDM routinely tracks and syncs any modified files and folders with the cloud when it is online. Conflicts arise if there are differences between a file or folder's local and remote versions since their last sync, usually if you make changes while offline for an extended period. The following are a few common reasons conflicts occur, which we think are worth noting:

Reason Cause Solution
File conflict When someone edits the content of a file remotely and simultaneously, you modify its content locally while you are offline. When you are back online, CDM saves a copy of the file in the same location as the file held in the cloud, renames it by appending a suffix with your email address, and then prompts you to decide how to resolve the conflict via the Issue resolver window.
File deletion When someone deletes a file remotely and simultaneously, you modify its content locally while you are offline. When you are back online, CDM saves a copy of the file in the same location as the file previously held in the cloud, and then prompts you to decide how to resolve the conflict via the Issue resolver window.
File name conflict When there is a clash between two files with the same name, for example, when you create, rename, or move a file locally to a location where another file with the same name exists in the cloud. CDM renames your file by appending a suffix with your email address in its name and then prompts you to decide how to resolve the conflict via the Issue resolver window.
Folder name conflict When there is a clash between two folders with the same name, for example, when you create, rename, or move a folder locally to a location where another folder with the same name exists in the cloud. CDM renames your folder by appending a suffix with your email address in its name and then prompts you to decide how to resolve the conflict via the Issue resolver window.

If your organization has enabled co-authoring, there are usually no conflicts when you work with Microsoft Office files, which are exclusively Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Understanding errors

Errors occur when CDM can’t successfully upload locally modified files to the cloud. There are a few reasons why you may encounter errors. These include but are not limited to the following:

Reason Cause Solution
Changes made offline When you edit a file offline due to network connectivity issues, an error can occur when someone else edits, deletes, or moves the same file remotely during your offline period. Once you’re back online, attempt to upload the file again.
Locked file When you modify and save a file locally, that is either checked out by another user or edited remotely in web view. Confirm if another user has checked out the file and request them to check it in. CDM will continually try to upload the file. However, if it remains checked out, CDM will save the file as a copy after repeated upload attempts and prompt you to decide how to resolve the error via the Issue resolver window.
Permissions issue When you lose access rights to a folder and then make changes, such as renaming, moving, or updating the folder or its contents, an error occurs when CDM attempts to sync your changes with SharePoint. Please get in touch with your system administrator.
Folder depth limit Your organization may have set depth limits for folder structures in OneDrive and SharePoint. Depth limitation applies to the combination of folder paths and file names. Exceeding the allowed depth limit can cause an error. Try flattening your folder structure to reduce depth and shortening file paths by renaming files and folders with long names to shorter ones.
SharePoint document library deletion When an administrator deletes a SharePoint document library while you’re locally modifying a file within it, an error occurs if you try to save the file and CDM attempts to upload it. Please get in touch with your system administrator.

Errors can also occur if there’s an issue with a drive. For example, if CDM is unable to map a drive and so on. Please get in touch with your administrator if you encounter errors related to your drives.
